I’ve been trying this thing lately where I ACTUALLY dress for success. I’m not talking power suits with shoulder pads, but I have been making more of an effort lately. I’ve had what some might call a string of bad luck that’s been bringing me down so in a last stitch effort to turn things around I’ve been wearing dresses and button up shirts instead of Old Navy fleece and baggy jeans. I’m not saying that I look nice everyday…the jeans and long-sleeved t-shirts are still in my weekly rotation, but they are being pulled out of my dresser less often as of late.
This strategy was not my own idea, it was actually something one of my co-workers mentioned in passing, only it stuck in my head and got me thinking. Can I change myself from the outside in? It’s a little She’s All That, but I’m serious. There’s something very powerful about putting on nice clothes and shoes and actually doing your hair. I’d mention make-up as well, but that would be taking things a little too far for me right now…I’m pretty lazy in that department. Pulling the nice digs out from the back of my closet hasn’t actually broken the streak of bad luck I’ve been having, but it’s made me feel a little more able to deal with what’s being thrown my way.
Maybe dressing for success is just a way of letting my outside catchup to the changes I’ve made to my inside. Either way I think it’s something that’s worth trying if you feel like you need a boost.
