So this might sound crazy but I have totally been striking this pose lately….a lot in the last couple months. Don’t worry, I haven’t been wearing metal cuffs and flying an invisible jet as well…it’s just the pose. But lets be honest if I looked that good in a bustier and star studded underpants I would be rocking that outfit from AM to PM. Until that happens I power pose in jeans and t-shirts or even my pajamas. So what’s this pose about and what caused me to start striking it? I watched Amy Cuddy’s TED talk titled How your body image shapes who you are.
Basically by adopting a power pose or in other words spreading yourself out, taking up more space you increase your testosterone and lower your cortisol (stress hormone) levels. That’s a pretty good combination. I’ve tried it before a confrontation, before a meeting at work…even during a meeting at work (don’t worry I didn’t use this particular pose).
I can honestly say that by pretending to be powerful (aka channeling my inner Wonder Woman) I have been able to change my inner dialogue, feel more confident, speak up more and even make better quick decisions. I’m not suggesting you go around doing this all the time or in the middle of a board meeting, but before a job interview, a big meeting or any other stressful time take a couple minutes to yourself and strike a pose. Then head on in and knock everyone’s socks off!
