Well….at least that’s what Chalean Johnson says. It’s been a little over 6 months since I started taking my health and fitness to a new level and while I’ve lost nearly 45lbs (yipee! hooray!) my fitness routine is getting a little bit boring. My sister Jill kindly loaned me TurboFire and I have been really enjoying it so when I found out that Chalene has another program called ChaLEAN Extreme (the name kills me) I jumped at the chance to give it a whirl.
Basically it’s a 3-month program that gets progressively harder. The main focus is strength training and muscle-building so your body can burn fat more efficiently…who doesn’t want to be a fat burning machine? The discs are divided into three phases called Burn, Push and Lean. I’ve just completed week 1 of the Burn phase so I only have a limited amount of information on the program at this point, but I thought I could give my first impressions.
So far I’ve been pretty impressed but also a little skeptical. It’s hard to wrap my head around the idea of spending three days a week focusing on lifting weights…..am I gonna gain weight (I mean it will be muscle right?) do I need to supplement with more cardio? For now my plan is to do the program as written for the first month and see what my results are like. Like the other fitness challenges I’ve done I took before pics and measurements so we shall see.
A snapshot of a weeks workouts looks like this; 3 days of strength training (three separate workouts each about 30 minutes long), 1 day of interval training (about 45 minutes) plus a 10 minute ab workout, and another interval workout (about 30 minutes) plus a stretch class (about 20 minutes). When I see it written out it looks pretty well-rounded and I have to admit I am pretty sore in some random places which leads me to believe that I was in a bit of a workout rut…training the same muscles the same way.
I will be sure to check in along the way and give more reviews of the program as I progress. For now I think I would recommend it, especially if you are new to weight lifting. Chalene does a great job at explaining proper form and showing modifications to make the exercises low-impact as well as more intense if that’s what you are looking for. Another three weeks and I’ll post an update of my progress! I love new challenges!
