I have a friend that decided to have a “yes year” a couple of years ago. This idea intrigues me, but I’m not sure how committed I could be to this for a whole year. From what she told me about that year it was jam-packed with adventures and experiences that were priceless….what also happened was she finished the year tired and low on cash. Yes years can be VERY expensive!
So what is a “yes year”? Basically it’s exactly what it sounds like, when someone asks you to do something or go someplace you say yes. You get invited to a party…say yes. Someone offers to let you use their cabin in the woods…yes please. You are given the opportunity to go to Spain and run with the bulls…..yes? Okay, maybe you shouldn’t say yes to EVERYTHING.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say I am having a true “yes year” (things like work and money get in the way) but I have been trying to make myself try new things and go new places whenever possible.
This brings me to my newest favorite weekend activity….Kayaking! Since I moved to New England almost two years ago I had been telling myself that I wanted to get out on the water. Well this year I decided to just go for it! I booked a kayak tour out of Rockport, MA and have been going nearly every weekend since! I’ve taken a couple other tours, an intro to kayaking class and even learned how to do kayak rescue (thanks Salem Kayak, y’all are amazing!). It’s been a fantastic adventure and I’m very glad I had the courage to try something new. The added bonus is kayaking is an awesome workout. Plus I get to see lots of beautiful scenery and spend time outdoors. What’s not to love?!
I’m looking forward to more “yes” activities and adventures in the future. Maybe snow shoeing in the winter or a day trip to Connecticut…who knows! Either way I’m going to try my best to say yes to as many things as possible. 🙂
What new things have you tried out this summer? Any other ocean adventures? Kayaking? Stand-up paddle boarding? Swimming?
