My sister Jill and I were having a conversation recently and she asked me how often I indulged. I replied by saying that I have something sweet everyday. I am a sweet lover so I’m always trying different things, right now I’m into a 1/2 cup of rice pudding with dried cherries (6WW+points)…sooooo good. Sometimes I spring for a So Delicious frozen treat, I’m partial to the coconut almond ice cream bar (4WW+points), or three dark chocolate covered marshmellows from Trader Joe’s (3WW+points). My point is I’m one of those people that likes to round off dinner with a dessert so I make sure I have a couple points (or calories for all you counters) to keep my sweet tooth sweet.
What I didn’t realize was Jill was talking about a different kind of indulgence. Think pizza, a trip to the local Mexican restaurant, Chinese food, pick your poison. We’re talking 16-20WW+points or somewhere between 500 and 800 calories! This kind of indulgence requires MUCH more planning. I experienced this today when my craving for guacamole slathered Mexican yumminess hit me and I decided I NEEDED Chipotle for dinner. After all I spent two hours today learning how to get back into a kayak after you fall out…which roughly translates to me clawing my way back into the thing and then falling back out again to learn another method (very tiring!).
Luckily I made this Chipotle decision pretty early in the day so I could adjust my lunch and snack consumption to fit in my favorite Chipotle combination (salad with fajita veggies, black beans, chicken, medium salsa, cheese and of course guacamole). By keeping my other meals light and full of fresh veggies and fruits I was able to get my Mexican fix without going over my daily allowance. If I’ve learned one thing on this weight loss journey it’s that planning ALWAYS pays off. If I plan and prep my healthy meals before the week starts I always have a better weekly weigh-in. Same goes for eating out, if I know I’m going out to lunch or dinner I make sure to keep my other meals and snacks in check. I know it takes lots of valuable time to be organized and planning and prepping can be a tedious way to spend a couple hours on a Sunday. They way I justify it is to remind myself that this is my health and that for better or worse it effects every aspect of my life so it’s in my best interest to take a little time to keep myself moving in the right direction. How do you guys deal with indulgences? Do you have a cheat day or just little treats throughout the week? What’s your favorite indulgence?
